Islam is a complete way of life, built upon a firm foundation of belief, worship, and action. However, there are certain actions or beliefs that can nullify a person’s Islam—taking them out of the fold without even realizing it. Knowing these matters is essential for every Muslim, not to judge others, but to protect their own faith and seek Allah’s pleasure sincerely.
1. Associating Partners with Allah (Shirk)
This is the gravest violation. Believing that anyone or anything has divine qualities or power besides Allah is an unforgivable sin if not repented from.
“Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him…” (Qur’an 4:48)
2. Taking Intermediaries in Worship
Calling upon saints, graves, or spiritual figures for help—believing they can influence Allah’s will—is a direct contradiction of Tawheed.
3. Not Considering Polytheists as Disbelievers
Denying the disbelief of those who associate partners with Allah or believing that their religion is acceptable is itself disbelief.
4. Believing that Guidance Other Than the Prophet’s is Better
Preferring man-made systems of law or ideologies over the clear teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah invalidates one’s submission to Allah.
5. Hating Any Part of Islam
Even if a person follows the religion outwardly, hating any part of Allah’s law, such as hijab, zakat, or prayer, can invalidate their faith.
6. Mocking Any Part of the Religion
Making jokes about Allah, His Messenger, or any Islamic rulings is a serious offense.
“Say: Was it Allah, and His verses, and His Messenger that you were mocking? Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief…” (Qur’an 9:65-66)
7. Practicing Magic or Supporting It
Magic, fortune-telling, or believing in horoscopes is major kufr. It relies on the unseen in ways that oppose belief in Allah’s control.
8. Supporting Disbelievers Against Muslims
Helping or siding with non-Muslims against the Muslims in a manner that harms the Ummah is a betrayal of Islam.
9. Believing That Some Are Free from the Shari’ah
Thinking that certain people are beyond the rules of Islam—whether scholars, saints, or leaders—is a false belief that leads to misguidance.
10. Turning Away from the Religion Entirely
Neglecting to learn, practice, or acknowledge the basics of Islam out of arrogance or indifference is itself a rejection.
